Work related stress. Today’s health professions recognise the importance of working with both body and mind, since ample scientific research shows the importance of the connection. Work related stress is the basis of burn-out, when the body refuses to continue to absorb the effects of consistently high demands in today’s work environment of tight schedules and overwhelming pressure. The physical and emotional effects of stress are wide ranging and can ultimately lead to serious medical conditions, with significant numbers of employees reporting symptoms. Trauma and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) has a recognised physiological component. It evokes hyper-arousal of the neurological system that results in difficulty coping with emotions, damage to the immune system and debilitating feelings such as shame and anxiety.
